Avery hesitated for a beat, but only a beat. He knew in
his heart that this was the right decision, because it was
what he wanted, not what society wanted for him. "Yeah, I
am."
Royal nodded. He seemed speechless with surprise;
clearly he hadn't seen this in his life plan. "Okay."
Avery gave a small smile. "Good bye, Royal." It didn't
feel like a goodbye, though. I felt like a beginning.

Avery drove to Beaux's apartment. He was nervous in a
way he'd never been with Royal, and he liked the feeling.
He knocked on the door.
It took a minute, but then Beaux's roommate opened
the door wearing only a towel.
"Hey. Is Beaux here?"
"He's got a class this morning. Are you Avery?"
"Yeah." Beaux had told his roommate about him? The
thought gave him hope that it wasn't too late for them.
"You want to wait for him?"
"Thanks."
He waited in Beaux's room. He paced the carpet; he
crossed and uncrossed his legs while sitting on the edge of
the bed. He folded some laundry and made Beaux's bed.
Then he waited & and waited &
"What are you doing?"
Avery looked up from putting Beaux's DVDs in the right
cases. "Waiting for you."
"Why?"
Avery got to his feet as Beaux shrugged out of his
jacket. "I broke up with Royal."
That seemed to catch Beaux by surprise. "Really?"
"Yup. I did it this morning and then came right over."
"Why? Did you break up with him, I mean?"
"I didn't love him. I wasn't happy with him. He's not
the one I see myself growing old with."
"But you don't want just one person."
"I want you, Beaux. I want to be with you and only you.
Maybe we're not meant to be monogamous; maybe it's
human nature to want more than one partner. I don't
know. But I've realized that I don't need more than you.

ever want. I've made my choice. Now make yours." He
tried to still the nervousness in his stomach, the slight
shaking in his fingers. What if Beaux said no? What if
Beaux had changed his mind?
Beaux pulled out his phone, and Avery gaped. This was
possibly the most important moment of his life, and Beaux
was texting? He pulled his own phone when it beeped a
moment later and couldn't help the grin that broke across
his face.
Beaux: I luv u.
Avery: I luv u 2.
